PCL Printing Resource Page
Welcome to the IntelliTech International Printer Control Language (PCL) page. This page is a resource for users of the Hewlett Packard printer control language, HP PCL5, in conjunction with IntelliBar bar code label printers.
PCL History
Hewlett Packard developed HP PCL 3 in 1984 for their first Laser Jet printer and continually improved HP PCL to provide advanced printer functionality for their evolving product line of LaserJet printers. Each PCL iteration includes all of the functionality of previous PCL versions to ensure backwards compatibility. Today, HP PCL is the most widely used, industry standard printer command language and virtually any computer system is able to communicate to LaserJet printers.
Hewlett Packard released HP PCL 5 in 1990 to support the LaserJet III. This version of PCL included support for scalable fonts and also included HP GL/2, the control language used for HP's CAD plotters that provides vector graphics support. HP PCL5 (in conjunction with HP GL/2) supports mono spaced and proportionally spaced fonts, rotated fonts, scalable fonts, filled/shadowed/mirrored fonts, downloaded fonts and downloaded predesigned forms and overlays.
IntelliBar PCL Printers
IntelliBar printers use HP PCL5 as a primary command language. Thus, IntelliBar printers emulate Hewlett Packard LaserJet III printers and fully support all HP PCL5 and HP GL/2 functions. Additionally, IntelliTech International has developed PCL extensions to HP PCL5 that support the resident bar code fonts and thermal printer functions of IntelliBar printers. PRINT PCL LABELS FROM POSTSCRIPT DATA USING GHOSTSCRIPT
This page describes a procedure to configure a locally or networked connected non-Postscript HP LaserJet III as a postscript printer using Ghostscript under Solaris 2.5.1-2.6 (SPARC) on SPARCstation 20 and ULTRA 10. The procedure is applicable to IntelliBar label printers as well since they emulate an HP LJ III. This page also covers configuration of an ink jet page printer.
